Western Carolina University, often referred to as simply WCU, is a coeducational public university located in Cullowhee, which is census-designated place in Jackson County, in the US state of North Carolina, with a population estimated at a number of more than 3 500 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
WCU traces its roots back in 1888, when the citizens of Cullowhee desired a better school for the community than was offered in public schools of that day, establishing what came to be known as Cullowhee Academy, the institution being founded to educate the people of the western North Carolina mountains. Since it was founded, the university expanded its mission, and has grown to become a major cultural, scientific, and educational force in the state and region, serving now more than 9,500 full time undergraduate and post graduate students.
WCU is academically organized into 5 undergraduate colleges, the Kimmel School, the Honors College and Graduate School, through which it offers its students educational programs, in various fields of study, among which there are: Applied Criminology, Accounting, Finance, and Economics, Business Computer Information Systems and Quantitative Analyses, Geosciences and Natural Resources and Construction Management.
The university’s athletic teams are known as the Western Carolina Catamounts, who participate in NCAA’s Division I Southern Conference, in various sports, including football, basketball, softball, baseball, soccer, golf and volleyball. The Catamounts have won numerous championships, in many of their sports, including 13 in baseball, between 1981 and 2007, one in men’s basketball, in ’96, 3 in women’s basketball, in 2005, 2007 and 2009, as well as 4 in volleyball, in ’83, ’85, ’86 and ’89, just to name a few.
Among the most resonant names on the list of notable WCU alumni, there are: James A. Beaty, Jr. - current U.S. District Judge and former nominee to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, Kevin Cassels and Tommy Dennison - Musicians with the rock band Mother Vinegar, Brad Hoover - Fullback for the Carolina Panthers (NFL), and Willie Williams - NFL Defensive Back for Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks, among others.
